Weekly update, 27th June

Who's relieved the sun's gone in for a bit?! We're all enjoying the cooler weather after last week's mini heatwave. Though with preparations for the Summer Picnic in full swing, we are keeping every digit crossed for a decent day of sunshine on Sunday!

What the volunteers have been up to:

Craft evening, 21st June

The third and final craft evening took place last week. Thanks to all who took part in these sessions and helped make some fab decorations for Sunday's Summer Picnic

Friday Group (Little Wittenham), 23rd June

The weed pulling work continues! The team continued their work in the fields around the aroboretum and took a break to enjoy the celebrations (and canapes!) at the Supporters' Day and Rose Ceremony (see below).

Supporters' Day and Rose Ceremony, 23rd June

We're delighted that so many of you could come along to the celebrations. The traditional midsummer Rose Ceremony is always a highlight and it was great to be able to share some of our successes of the last year and look forward to the future.

Sign painting, 27th June

Just this morning we had some much needed help from a couple of volunteers who've painted the signs ready for Sunday - thanks guys!

Coming up...

Summer Picnic, this Sunday!

Last call for volunteers for this weekend! There's still time to let us know if you'd like to come and help out at the Summer Picnic on Sunday. It should be a great day with loads going on: make a smoothie on the smoothie bike, mini melodeon workshops, craft a party hat or natural print placemat, pop some corn on the fire, join in a family ceilidh or sit back and enjoy some live music... Plus party games, DIY face painting and a barbecue - what more could you ask for? It would be great if you could join us as a visitor if not a volunteer! And yes, there will be cake and party bags...

Weekly update, 20th June

It. Is. Hot.

How are we all coping folks? It's not escaped us at Volunteering HQ that it's pretty toasty out there! Happily it's looking like it's going to be a fine and beautiful day for the Supporters' Day and Rose Ceremony this Friday, and we're looking forward to seeing lots of you here to celebrate with us.

Take care in the heat (and use it as an excuse to eat all the ice cream!).

What the volunteers have been up to:

Craft evening, 14th June

More successful crafting last week in preparation for the Summer Picnic (which is only 12 days away now!). The third and final craft evening is tomorrow (more below).

Thursday Group (Abingdon), 15th June

The group were back in the conservation areas pulling ragwort and thistle from the meadow - long sleeves and trousers were needed to avoid the biting insects! Meanwhile, the derelict building was coming down in the background! Volunteer Mike Towndrow sent some images from earlier in the week (one below). The next session is 29th June.

Friday Group (Little Wittenham), 16th June

This week the team were back to doing some weed control. They were working in the field next to the arboretum, pulling docks and thistles. The next session is 23rd June.

Coming up...

Final craft evening, 21st June

Your last chance to join us for some crafting! We've had a great couple of weeks making decorations for the Summer Picnic but there's still a bit more to do. Tea, cake and materials provided. Let us know if you'll be joining us.

Sign painting, 27th June

Summer Picnic preparations continue with a session to paint the chalkboards that we use to help people navigate the site. We'll start around 10am, please drop us a line if you'll be coming along.

Summer Picnic set up, 30th June

We need all hands on deck the Friday before a festival to help set up the site! If you could spare a couple hours any time during the day (9am-5pm) it would be very much appreciated. As always, let us know if you can make it.

Weekly update, 13th June

We hope you are all enjoying the return of summer! We have lots on the horizon that requires the help of lovely volunteers so have a scroll down and see what we have coming up.

Firstly though, We're also pleased to let you know that the derelict Sandles building at Thrupp Lake is finally being demolished this week! Work starts today with site preparations and the building itself will come down on Thursday or Friday. It will take around two weeks to complete and the circular walk and byway will remain open during this time. Click here to find out more.

What the volunteers have been up to:

Craft evening, 7th June

We made a great start crafting decorations for the Summer Picnic last Wednesday. We're meeting up again tomorrow evening if you'd like to join us (see below)!

Thursday Group (Abingdon), 8th June

The final new wildlife feature at Thrupp Lake is complete! The sand martin bank installed a few weeks ago was filled up with sand by the volunteers, ready for its new tenants. This was part of a project supported by TOE2 with funding from Grundon Waste Management which saw an otter holt, tern rafts and bird and bat boxes also installed on the reserve. The next session is Thursday 15th June.

Friday Group (Little Wittenham), 9th June

The group were busy repairing the deer fence in Little Wittenham Wood - it was a really successful day clearing the fence line and installing around 16 new posts. The next session is Friday 16th June.

Sunday Group (Little Wittenham), 11th June

This month the group were out in one of the wildflower meadows, Sires Hill West, pulling thistles before they go to seed (and enjoying the sunshine!). The next session is on Sunday 9th July.

Coming up...

Craft evening, 14th and 21st June

Two more opportunities to help with make decorations for the Summer Picnic/Earth Trust Birthday Party! Tea, cake and materials provided. Get in touch if you think you'll be joining us.

Oxfordshire Play Association Play Day, 24th June

The OPA are hosting two Play Days, with the first being in Didcot on Saturday 24th June. Earth Trust is attending with some fun nature-themed activities to get involved with, including sawing wooden discs to create animal badges and we need your help. About 1,500 are expected so it'll be a busy day! You'll be fully supported by Earth Trust staff and no prior experience is necessary - just bags of energy and enthusiasm. Let us know if you're interested in this or the second Play Day in Blackbird Leys on 27th July.

Volunteers' Week: Taking the Next Step

On the final day of Volunteers' Week 2017, here's a great volunteering success story:

Lucy Tomkinson, our Community Reserves Warden, tells us about Tom, one of our conservation volunteers, who used his experience to move on to bigger and better things:

“Tom volunteered with us at the Earth Trust for nearly two years, with both the Land Management Team, coming along to the practical groups in Abingdon, and he also volunteered with the Research and Skills Team carrying out the butterfly transect at Thrupp Lake and hedgerow surveys at a few of the community reserves.

"This spring Tom was successful in getting a 12 month Community Wildlife Traineeship place with the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT). This will give Tom even more practical experience and training that, along with all the volunteering he’s done with us at the Earth Trust, will boost his chances of successfully gaining paid employment in conservation. Tom will be missed but we wish him all the best in this next stage of his adventure into conservation and from all of us we just wanted to say a massive thank you!”

Weekly update, 6th June

What a busy week it's been!

Thank you to everyone that has been out with us over Volunteers' Week so far. There's been lots going on and we couldn't be more pleased with how it's all gone.

Thanks also to all who came out to the BBQ on Sunday, it was lovely to see so many of you despite the great British weather! We know we say this a lot but we really couldn't operate as we do without the help of you wonderful folk!

What the volunteers have been up to...

Wildlife Wednesday, 31st May

This school holiday's Wildlife Wednesday was at Abbey Fishponds in Abingdon, and we had a lovely afternoon helping families explore the reserve and have fun outdoors. One of the volunteers who came along to help was one of our Trustees, Chris. The next Wildlife Wednesday is in the summer holidays and will be at Thrupp Lake (26th July).

Thursday Group (Abingdon), 1st June

It was all about weeds for the conservation groups this week! Lucy and the team were pulling ragwort and thistles from some of the grassland at Radley Lakes. They were rewarded with some great finds, including bee orchids and common spotted orchids. The next session is Thursday 15th June.

Friday Group (Little Wittenham), 2nd June

George and the Friday volunteers were also pulling thistles; they were working in one of the wildflower meadows off Sires Hill. The next session is Friday 9th June.

Saturday Group (Abbey Fishponds, Abingdon), 3rd June

This month the group were replacing old footpath boards, pulling invasive Himalayan balsam from the reedbeds and removing cleaver from the path edges before it goes to seed. Cleaver grows rapidly in warm weather and can quickly smother other plants so it's important to remove it before the seeds spread. The next session is on 1st July.

The Big Dig! 5th June

The weather did try to scupper our plans, but thanks to a couple of intrepid volunteers who were willing to brave the blustery, wet conditions, the community allotment is well underway! For more information about getting involved with this project please get in touch.

Coming up...

Craft evening, 7th June

Don't forget it's the first Summer Picnic Craft Evening tomorrow 7pm-9pm! We'll be in the Learning Barn (the building directly opposite the office front door) and we can't wait to get making and caking... Drop us a line to let us know you're coming.

Final Volunteers' Week taster session, 9th June

Volunteers' Week might officially end tomorrow (7th June) but if you'd like a taste of conservation volunteering you can come and join the Friday Group this week. The session will focus on repairing deer fencing in Little Wittenham Wood. Get in touch if you'd like to join us.

Volunteers' Week: Volunteering for all Ages

Our volunteers are all ages and come from all walks of life. In this video, hear from two of our research volunteers: John - a recent retiree looking to put his skills and spare time to good use - and Hannah - a recent graduate looking for more experience to help boost her CV.

Volunteers' Week: Thank You!

Yesterday we held a 'thank you' barbecue for our wonderful volunteers. The weather wasn't ideal (what do you expect from the British summertime?!) but we all enjoyed delicious lamb burgers, hot dogs and bacon rolls, sourced from our Farm Step businesses Emma's Ewesful Acres and Coopers Oxford Pork, and some homemade cakes!

We really couldn't achieve as much as we do without our volunteers, so once again: THANK YOU!

Volunteers' Week: Meet the Trustees

Did you know Trustees are volunteers? Our board includes individuals from a whole range of backgrounds, each bringing unique skills and experience. Here’s what some of them have to say:

Graham Shaw, Chair of Trustees

“Since moving to Dorchester-on-Thames 12 years ago, I’ve been fascinated by Wittenham Clumps which I see every morning – the history, the location and the fact that they are public spaces for the whole community to enjoy, watched over impeccably by Earth Trust. Walking on the Clumps is truly inspiring as you overlook the Thames, the woodlands and the last throw of the Chilterns in the distance.

“So when Robin (Buxton, former Trustee) asked me a couple of years ago to speak with Jayne (Manley, CEO) about becoming a Trustee, I was delighted and jumped at the chance. Since then, I learned much more about how Earth Trust engages with the public to deepen its understanding of the natural world around us and how it’s possible to work with – not against – nature, both economically and sustainably.

“Like many other charitable organisations, Earth Trust faces numerous challenges in securing its long-term future, despite the wonderful support it has received in the past. Overcoming these challenges is vital, given the importance of Earth Trust in educating all, but particularly young people, in ways that will help us to create a sustainable future. As a Trustee, my role is to be part of the amazing team that has brought Earth Trust so far and ensure it’s still here when the next generation – and the one thereafter – go running on the Clumps.”

Dr Mary Barkham

“I became a Trustee at the Earth Trust having met Jayne (Manley, CEO) whilst on a visit to the River of Life Project in 2015. I had for many years walked at Wittenham Clumps and Thrupp Lake with my family and was delighted to have the opportunity to get involved.

“I have a real interest in the research that has been done by the Earth Trust and in particular that on tree health using Paradise Wood. With threats such as ash dieback facing our native tree species resources like this are vital to inform future decisions on the tree species that are grown in the UK.

“Although I now live in South Wales I have been able to continue to be involved as a Trustee, either joining in meetings in person, or by phone, and have really enjoyed using my knowledge from my previous career to support them. It is a great pleasure to work with such an enthusiastic and knowledgeable team. Helping at events such as the Lambing Weekends has also been great fun and many of my friends have now joined in too. Volunteers at the Earth Trust are well managed so it’s a pleasure to help.”

Chris Phillips

“I have been visiting the Earth Trust site for many years both walking with my own family and bringing children to courses and events.

“As a retired head-teacher I know just how much schools value visiting The Earth Trust and the unique opportunities it provides for young people. It introduces them to the messages for sustainable living through practical activities and memorable experiences in the outdoors.

“I was delighted to be asked to become more closely involved as a Trustee and am particularly excited about the new Visitor Centre and how this will enable us to spread our messages even further!”

This week, Chris also decided to take part in one of our volunteering taster sessions – he joined the Communications and Engagement Team at Wildlife Wednesday at Abbey Fishponds and had great fun helping families explore the nature reserve.

Volunteers' Week: Why Volunteer?

During Volunteers' Week we're sharing some of our volunteer voices. In this video, hear from Dawn who volunteers on our reception desk and at events. Dawn wanted to build her confidence and gain experience as she had been out of the workplace for a number of years due to illness.

There are plenty of opportunities to give volunteering a go - try one of our taster sessions during Volunteers' Week or get in touch to have a chat.
